La Paz, BCS Fishing Report 11/23/08-11/30/08
Happy Thanksgiving to all our American Anglers….well at least to everyone who celebrates the Holiday for that matter. Is there a better way to work off all the glutton and triptiphane than a few days fishing in Baja California Sur on the Sea of Cortez? The weather in La Paz is mild during the right now, with temperatures in the mid 80’s and the beeze a bit more active than we’d like. However, there are MANY great things to be and remain excited about: like the new added services that Alaska and Horizon Airlines are providing directly into the La Paz Leon International Airport. Service from LAX is now provided 5 days a week on Mon, Wed, Thurs, Sat, and Sun. Flight time is around 2hrs. As an affiliate of Alaska Air, by using our link to book your flight, clients can be sure they are receiving the most current promotions and best deals offered through Alaska Air.
Fishing during the winter months is excellent through the Straits of Lorenzo and especially at the numerous Island areas to rockfish for big grouper, Pargos, and Cabrilla. One fish that stands out strong in these winter months is the Sierra Mackeral. These hard fighting fish will hit almost anything shiny and hit it HARD! If you are specifically fishing for Sierra, be sure to have a wire lead, as their barracuda-like teeth will free them more often than you think. Schools of Sierra have moved into the shallower waters where anglers are having field days with these fish. Drop a bit deeper and you may surprise yourself with what you catch.
The variety is still surprisingly very strong and very diverse this winter. We have heard more reports that the elusive Wahoo are still being hooked (if they’re being caught, how elusive can they be?) and even fewer are getting landed. Dorado remain very popular throughout various warmer water pockets and the occasional billfish can be fished with success as well.
As we wrap up 2008, I want to remind everyone to listen for the LaPazFishingCharters.com Weekly Fishing Report with Ronnie Kovach’s Radio Fishing University on the 50,000 mega-watt AM 830 KLAA every Sat morning from 5-7am PST. We will be hosting many listener trips in 2009 as well as filming some additional episodes for Fox Sports Net with some different grab bags of athletes and entertainers. Join us and beat a favorite celebrity on the water!
