Buenos dias los pescadores! Last week was pretty busy off (the water) as La Paz wrapped up it’s annual Carnival celebrations.  The city was alive every night with music, a rollercoaster and other rides; games, and foods.  Great time of year to see the community all together.  Weather on the water has been off and on windy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch fish, as Sierras and Yellowtail kept rods bent in later week action. Buenos dias mis amigos!  For those anglers that made the quick jump down to La Paz, they were rewarded with a great week of strong fishing and good weather.  We still had a solid variety of fish this week, with Yellowtail really hitting hard- big ones too!  Our winter fishing remains strong, with nice weather and fewer anglers and tourists crowding the areas, both ingredients for a great trip. Buenos dias los pescadores!  Typical winter fishing down here right now; call it a pargo (snapper) buffet this week.  The waters in the Sea of Cortez are still offering a nice variety of species right now.  However, with the winds still a factor, it is much more pleasant to stay closer to shore then get out into the open waters.  When calm, the weather was nice and warm for most of this past week, with temperatures in the low 80’s.  Small Yellowtails, make an appearance, giving a little deja vu to last year’s Yellowtail action. Pretty good numbers as fishing was more common to the normal winter seasons this week.  The best spots to hit were inshore, targeting Sierra Mackerels, pargo and cabrilla.  Winds became a bit more of a factor as the water temperature dropped and the color became more green.  All in all, we continue to have a solid winter with a great variety of species hitting the decks. A continued Happy New Year los pescadores; 2009 continues to be off to a great start with great weather and a huge variety of fish in the Sea of Cortez!  What an excellent way to start a clean slate with solid open water action and outstanding inshore fishing.  Sierra Mackerel are still the most frequently caught fish right now, but literally everything that can be caught was getting caught this past week. Feliz Navidad! La Paz is a such a beautiful place around the holidays; the city’s rich history and tradition really standout during the Christmas season.  The fishing was again, successful & peaceful this week with very few anglers on the water.  Those that did go out fishing, their numbers were strong and variety was high.  Sierra Mackerel still dominate the scene, but Pargo (snapper) and Cabrilla (seabass) seem to be getting hungrier. Feliz Navidad and a Happy (safe & healthy) Holidays from the crew of MARIANA, Incand LaPazFishingCharters.com.  This week the fishing community, which is much closer than many of us realize, lost a great angler and wonderful educator.  David Inchinaga passed away during the morning of December 19th after losing his battle to cancer.  Please take a minute to pray for his family as they grieve during the holiday season.  God blessed the angling community with his knowledge, friendship, and “Old School” presence; he will be missed.

The fishing in La Paz remains challenging this winter; its windy,  cold in the evenings, and can be rough and wet as you make your way to the many world famous fishing grounds here.  However, for those that persevere and “go for it,” we are still catching an amazing variety of great fish that the areas are well known for-  Call it “quid pro quo.” Read the rest of this entry »

La Paz, BCS Fishing Report 11/30/08-12/7/08

December 8th, 2008

The “hot” fishing continues despite cooling waters and breezy conditions.  Now that we are well into our winter fishing season, fewer anglers are out, and this makes for wide open fishing at all the best spots!  Typical to winter fishing down here, schools of Sierra Mackerel are hitting all over the place and really keeping the entertainment levels high.  Inshore fishing continues to build as Cabrilla (sea-bass), Pargo (snapper), Los Toros (jack crevalle), and permit, remain the usual suspects.

However, some unusual faces this late in the season are still around and always a treat to catch. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American Anglers….well at least to everyone who celebrates the Holiday for that matter.  Is there a better way to work off all the glutton and triptiphane than a few days fishing in Baja California Sur on the Sea of Cortez?  The weather in La Paz is mild during the right now, with temperatures in the mid 80’s and the beeze a bit more active than we’d like.  However, there are MANY great things to be and remain excited about: Read the rest of this entry »

“They’re baaaa-Aaack!” The waters of the Sea of Cortez are getting colder as we move closer and closer to our official winter fishing- mucho Sierra Mackeral confirm exactly what time of year it is.  Inshore fishing continues to get stronger as anglers get more familiar with Cabrilla and Pargo fishing off the mainland or from various spots off of the islands Esiritu Santo and Cerralvo.  Dorado fishing remains strong in various spots around the islands and really strong towards Las Arenas/Muertos Bay.  The winter fishing in La Paz is a lot of fun, especially on lighter tackle vs the generally smaller fish caught this time of year.
