Fishing continues to get more challenging as the “winds of change” start to blow with more frequency in November. Inshore fishing gets stronger, but the recently strong open water bite has subsided as water temperatures drop and fishing becomes a bit more normal this week. This is not an uncommon experience this time of year as we are seasonally shifting into the winter climate and marine migration patterns. However, patience can be an angler’s best friend. Buenos Dias from La Paz Baja California Sur. Fewer anglers populated the waters near La Paz this week because, (drum roll) The Western Outdoor News Tuna Jackpot Tournament was going in Cabo San Lucas! Big money payouts with nearly 100 teams in this year’s tourney. For those that didn’t participate and stayed local to fish, BIG rewards with Dorado, Tuna, and (BIGGER drum roll) Wahoo! All in all when you’re in fishing in Baja, you can’t complain- you are probably on vacation. Pretty strong numbers coming in this week from many of the usual La Paz hot spots, but wind continues to challenge fishing in October. The beginning of the week was strong with better numbers and varieites biting in the waters south of La Paz towards Las Arenas. Hurricane Norbert is definitely behind us, as anglers are back on the water and back in action. Little drop in the numbers and varietes of fish we’ve been seeing. Dorado were bigger this week, strong bonita #’s gave us some larger bait, but the giant squid are still around and these worked well on the dodo’s also. Read the rest of this entry »

Hurricane Norbert wasn’t the only highlight of the week as strong varieties of fish overcome strong weather. A few days before Norbert made landfall, we were seeing reports of 100+ winds and a rating of a Category 4. This storm turned out to produce very little precipitation and a lot of wind, more anti-climatic than destructive. Read the rest of this entry »
